All Nippon Airways (ANA) has today confirmed an order for 15 new Dreamliners plus five options. The order is split between the Boeing 787-9 and 787-10, and is worth more than $5bn at list prices. ANA plans to fly the 787-10s domestically, replacing some of its older Boeing 777s for better fuel efficiency and carbon emission reduction.
20 more widebodies for the ANA fleet
All Nippon Airways (ANA) has today announced the purchase of 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners to add to its long haul fleet. These new aircraft will bring the total number of Dreamliners operated by ANA to more than 100, making it the world’s biggest operator of the type. The deal is estimated to be worth more than $5bn at list prices.
The order is neatly split between the Boeing 787-9 and the larger Boeing 787-10, with the airline ordering 11 of the -10s and nine 787-9s (four firm and five options). ANA says that investment in these new and highly efficient aircraft will allow it to achieve its sustainability goals and long term fleet renewal aims.
Yutaka Ito, Executive Vice President of ANA and ANA Holdings commented on the purchase, saying,
“Boeing’s 787s have served ANA with distinction, and we are proud to expand our fleet by adding more of these technologically advanced aircraft. These planes represent a significant step forward for ANA as we work to make our entire fleet more eco-friendly and to reduce noise output. Introducing the 787-10 on the domestic routes will help ANA Group maintain its leadership role and improve our ability to operate as a responsible corporate citizen.”
Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing at Boeing expressed his approval of the order, saying,
“ANA has grown into one of the leading airline groups in Asia by continually raising the bar for customer satisfaction and investing in the most technologically-advanced and capable fleet. We are truly honored that ANA HD is coming back to order more 787 planes with plans to boost their Dreamliner fleet to more than 100 jets. We are confident that the unique capabilities of the 787-10 will continue to safely serve its passengers with best-in-class comfort and reliability.”
All the Dreamliners ordered today will be powered by the GEnx-1B engine, as opposed to the troubled Rolls-Royce Trent 1000.
Flying the 787-10 domestically
Interestingly, ANA has said that the Boeing 787-9s are slated for international service, as you would expect, but that the 787-10 will be used on domestic Japanese routes. This will make it the first carrier in Japan to use the Dreamliner domestically.
ANA has said that the 787s will be used to replace the Boeing 777s currently deployed on these routes. The airline says that it will achieve 25% better fuel efficiency through the aircraft switch, and that it will also reduce noise emissions too.
ANA has 57 Boeing 777s in its fleet, including 20 777-200s and 35 777-300s. While the average age of these is 15.3 years and 11.3 years respectively, some individual aircraft in the fleet are over 20 years old. While these 777s probably have some usable life left in them, for a Japanese airline that prides itself on a modern, fuel-efficient fleet, they’re pretty much ripe for retirement.
ANA flies to more than 50 destinations within Japan, many of which receive a widebody service due to the high passenger demand. The 787-10s are slated for delivery starting 2022 and concluding in 2024. The -9s are coming less quickly, with deliveries beginning in 2024 and completed by 2025.
